James Ellis Stanford

James Ellis Stanford age 97, of Newcastle, OK, passed away Tuesday March 31, 2020. Known to friends and family as Ellis, he was born Nov 11, 1922 in Washington OK, the oldest of three sons born to William Ellis Stanford and Anna Elizabeth (Claunch) Stanford. He was raised primarily in Washington and graduated from Newcastle high school. After high school, Ellis began working as a laborer building the ALCAN highway, and later worked for the North American Aviation Company in Southern California. Ellis answered the call to service for his country and joined the United States Navy. Ellis’s life would change forever when he met a young lady Irene Estelle Michener. It was love at first sight. They eloped and were married June 26, 1942 in Washington, Oklahoma. Ellis worked with sheet metal, building airplanes at Tinker Air Force Base, retiring as a supervisor after 30 years of dedicated service. His greatest joy was working his cattle on the ranch. He always had cattle and never considered them work. When he wasn’t working Ellis enjoyed playing checkers, and never missed a good domino game. He was man of great faith, and a charter member of the First Baptist Church in Newcastle. He was proud of his community and its history, and fondly recalled that his father was the 2nd child born in Norman, after the Land Rush of 1889. He was a wonderful husband and father, uncle and a great friend to many. He will be dearly missed!

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Stanford;

Parents, Bill and Anna Stanford and

2 brothers, Joe and Jack Stanford.

He is survived by his son, Larry Stanford and wife, Carol of Phoenix, Arizona; and

Numerous nieces and nephews.
