Take-A-Tree Day a blooming success

‘Take-a-Tree Day’ was held Friday, October 12 at the City of Newcastle Vehicle Maintenance Office. The special day gave Newcastle residents the chance to take home native Oklahoma trees ( 5 - g a l l o n) for a $20 donation per tree to the Newcastle Community Foundation. The trees were originally available to Newcastle residents only, but by days end they were available to anyone wanting a tree.

Donations will be used for the maintenance of city trees and other park improvements.

“This is really a fantastic donation and our community will benefit for years to come because of it,” said Jeannette McNally, Newcastle Economic Development Director. “The Newcastle Community Foundation focuses on community improvements, and planting more trees is a perfect fit,” she added.

Coming up Saturday, October 20 the Newcastle Community Foundation will hold a Community Tree Planting Day at Veterans Park (705 NW 10th).

The event is open to anyone who wishes to volunteer to help plant hundreds of trees in Veterans Park. All volunteers and civic groups are, welcomed to participate. The event starts at 9 a.m. and will last until all the trees have been planted.

“The Oklahoma native trees will be a welcomed improvement to our parks that everyone may enjoy” said Kevin Self, Newcastle Interim City Manager.

“The tree planting day provides an opportunity for Newcastle residents to come together and showcase the wonderful spirit of our community,” Self added.

To make it easier on volunteers McNally says the holes will be pre-dug for the trees.
