Newcastle residents take interest in time capsule

Local business owner Tammy Durham asked the community to share their pieces of history with the people of the future.

She did so by asking for items to be donated for a time capsule to be buried under the foundation of her new business.

Durham, owner of Island Time Liquor, is expanding her business by adding a convenience store next to her current business and saw this as the opportunity to bury a time capsule, something that fascinates her.

“I have always wanted to do a time capsule. I buried one with my family, but have always wanted to do one on a larger scale. I think it’s just so cool to think that years and years from now people will find this thing and open it to see a part of history. How is that not so cool?” Durham said.

Encapsulated or not, that was three weeks ago. Time has passed and Durham and her employees buried a capsule Monday complete with items donated by the community of Newcastle.

A copy of The Newcastle Pacer, money, brochures, software, liquor bottles, cell phone and a plethora of other items were included in the capsule before it was covered with cement and left for future generations to discover.

Durham will also be installing a corner stone in the brick of the store, hoping to fill with photos and letters to those who open it in the future.

Instructions to open the buried capsule on October 21, 2045 are denoted the shell.

We may not know what tomorrow will bring, but whoever opens the capsule in the future certainly will have first-hand evidence of what happened in the past. At least Newcatle’s version.
