Former Racer QB throws seven TDs for SWOSU Bulldogs
Southwestern Oklahoma State University quarterback and former Newcastle Racer standout Casey Freeman had one of those games that most any football player dreams about.
Freeman, a junior at SWOSU in Weatherford, threw a whopping seven touchdown passes during the Bulldogs’ 49-35 victory over Arkansas-Monticello on Aug. 30 in the ASAP Kickoff Classic. He was 18-for-26 passing for a career-high 416 yards. His seven TD passes matched a Great American Conference (GAC) record previously set three other times.
Freeman easily surpassed the SWOSU record of four touchdown passes. He connected with eight different receivers in the game, throwing touchdowns to five different Bulldogs – two apiece going to Jared Rayburn and Turner Jackson. Joel Blumenthal, Kyshawn Richards, and Kameron Bradley caught the other scores.
“I had seven touchdowns,” Freeman said. “It was pretty neat.”
As a sophomore last season at SWOSU, Freeman threw for 1,801 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing 165-of-311 passes. His previous best was three touchdown passes against both East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma State last year.
Freeman was a standout at Newcastle under former head coach Keith Bolles. As a senior in 2014, he was All-City Class 4A Defensive Player of the Year as well as honorable mention all-state and an all-star selection.
He threw for more than 2,000 yards and 27 touchdowns while also rushing for 11 TDs as a senior. Freeman was an honorable mention all-state selection in basketball and a four-year letter winner for the Racers in football while also playing basketball (three years) and baseball (one year.)
“I hope we win out, win the GAC, make the playoffs and make a ›run,” Freeman said. “That’s what I hope we’re capable of and I think we can do that.”
Freeman wants to play in the NFL someday. “I want to see if I have a chance of having a pro day and keep continuing to play football. I’m going to pursue that and go with it.”
Freeman was a nursing major, but he has changed to an exercise science major with a minor in sports management. He also wants to get his master’s degree in business.
Five-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady of the New England Patriots is without a doubt his favorite player. “I love Tom Brady,” Freeman said, “and the fire behind his play. I love how he rallies the troops and how he also takes care of his body. Hopefully, in the next 10 years, I’ll be playing on Sundays. That would be a dream.”
Freeman (the son of Royce Freeman and Beth Robertson) has some words of encouragement for this year’s Racers.
“I would tell them to keep going and ride the waves – just keep pushing and keep going,” Freeman said. “I’d tell them to be coachable, be in the weight room, and keep working at their craft. It may not be the next game, but they’ll see hard work pay off.”
