Newcastle loses to Cache 32-7

The Newcastle Racers football team lost to the Cache Bulldogs, 32-7, last Thursday on the road. The Racers dropped to 3-4 overall on the season and 2-2 in District 4A-1 play.

Cache improved its record to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in district play, which assures the Bulldogs a spot in the Class 4A playoffs. Cache is ranked No. 9 in this week’s Class 4A standings and the Bulldogs are first in the district with a perfect record.

In the first quarter, Cache scored on a one-yard run and the PAT was successful for a 7-0 lead with about six minutes to go in the period. With about three minutes left, the Racers were driving and had the ball on Cache’s 36-yard line.

But, Newcastle turned the ball over on downs to the Bulldogs. In the second quarter, Cache quarterback Gabe Diaz completed a 23-yard scoring pass to Phoenix Medina for a touchdown. The PAT was good for the Bulldogs and they led, 14-0, with 10 minutes to go before halftime.

With about four minutes left before halftime, Cache’s Hunter Tate ran the ball in for a touchdown from 17 yards out. The ‘Dawgs ran the 2-point conversion and scored to make it a 22-0 ballgame over the Racers.

Ralph Fawaz of Cache kicked a 32-yard field goal with under a minute left before halftime to make the score 25-0. Newcastle finally scored with about 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter when Jake Cox scored on a 2-yard run. The PAT was good and that made the score 25-7 in favor of Cache.

Newcastle recovered a fumble by Cache at the Bulldogs’ 33-yard line with under 10 minutes left in the game. The Racers pounded the ball down to the 15 but couldn’t score.

Cache’s Kynel Daniels ended the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run. With the PAT, the final score was 32-7. Newcastle needs to win two more games this season in order to qualify for the playoffs.

The Racers’ next game will be at 7 p.m. on Friday at they travel all the way west to Elk City. The Elk City Elks are 0-7 on the season. Newcastle’s last two regular-season games of the year will be at home on Nov. 1 against Weatherford and on the road Nov. 8 at Elgin.
