Newcastle’s Jake Cox makes 2nd Team ‘Little City Defense’
Senior football player Jake Cox was named to the second team of the “Little City Defense” by The Oklahoman and the OSSAA last Friday.
Cox (a 5-foot-9, 145-pound athlete) had a great senior season last fall for the Newcastle Racers football team, which barely missed making the Class 4A state playoffs following season-ending losses to Weatherford (28-17) and Elgin (13-10).
Cox was named as the second team’s kick returner. Last season, he returned 12 kickoffs for 200 yards for an average of 16.7 yards per return in 10 games.
Cox also returned six punts for 63 yards for a 10.5 average. As a wide receiver, he caught 47 passes for 614 yards and four touchdowns. He ranked third on Newcastle’s roster in scoring with 38 points – behind Casey Porter’s 53 points and Teagun Jordan’s 60 points.
Now, it’s time for Cox to lace up his spikes and grab his outfield glove for baseball season. The Newcastle Racers went 24-12 last spring and made the Class 4A state tournament under head coach Mike Crossley.
Cox performed admirably on the diamond last year, hitting a robust .388 with 21 runs batted in and 40 runs scored along with a nice .450 on-base percentage. He also helped the Racers with his glove work in center field.
