Senior moments from the Newcastle Senior Center
DOROTHY’S DABLINGS/ Senior Citizen happenings
Hello Newcastle Seniors. The heat is still hanging on but summer is coming to a close. I hope everyone has had a good, safe and happy summer. The purple flowers at the Senior Center are still blooming and beautiful. Someone must be doing a good job of keeping them watered. I have three large Rose of Sharon bushes that are still full of blooms. They are so pretty.
Attendance at the center is pretty stable. Actually, it continues to increase steadily. We are so proud of our Senior Center and we encourage anyone over 55 years of age to make it a regular occasion to eat here. Our meals are well planned and healthy. Our cooks have beautiful smiles and they show them a lot. They also are very talented cooks. Come and join us any day. Lunch is served Monday thru Friday 11:30 to 12:30. Call 387-2100 if you are unable to come to the center but would like a meal delivered. We have a handicap equipped van that can pick you up and return you home free of charge if you would like that service. Our goal is to serve any and all senior adults of this community.
I spoke with Phil and some of the employees at the library concerning new, and not so new, programs they are offering. There is so much going on there all the time for seniors, teens and children. I know we have grandparents helping with young children. There is Pre-K Story Time Wednesdays at 10:00 AM designed for children 2-5 years old but older children are welcome. Baby Story Time is also Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. designed for babies up to 24 months. Children are just never too young to start learning.
There are several adult activities designed for seniors but all adults are welcome. The first Saturday of the month at 10:30 is a writing workshop. The second Saturday is “Painting” with Holly and the third Saturday is “Color On”, using colored pencils. All of these are free and supplies are all provided by Friends of the Library.
There are “Therapy Band” classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays now thru October 10 at 2:00 PM. These classes are designed to help tone muscles, increase strength and balance. Registration is required for this and recommended to attend the entire 12 sessions, although it is now too late for a couple of them.
Now for a very important one, “Using Medication Safely”. This program is designed to assist you in decisions regarding your medications and reduce the risk of having a drug related problem. This is a one day seminar on Thursday, September 26 at 10:00 AM. Registration is required. All of these classes and programs are free.
There is always something new at the library and I will try to keep everyone posted on those. For more information on any program or activity, please call 387-5076.
We are still playing BINGO on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at about 12:45. There are prizes to be won. The cost is $3.00. BUNCO is on hold right now due to not enough people each time to play. There will be a new game instead called “13” on Thursday October 3rd. This game is free.
Our seniors for the month of September are Fred Johnston and Bill Mooney. They are relatively new to the center but are very constant in attendance. Congratulations Fred and Bill.
Have a good week. Reach out to someone and make a new friend.
