What is Worship?

SETTING THE PACE / Living life with an eternal perspective

Worship is an interesting word. You hear it in many different ways and circumstances. For the guy who is in love, someone says, “He worships the ground she walks on.” For the football fanatic, “He worships his team.” For the churchgoer, “That was a great worship service.” But what does this word really mean? What is worship?

The word worship literally means “worth-ship.” The word speaks to what is of worth to us and what we value. I once heard worship defined like this, “Worship is what we value and how it impacts our life.” Truly, every single person worships someone or something because we all have things we value in our lives. The question is, “What or whom do we worship?”

To answer that question, you have to take an honest look at some things. I think there are at least four ways to determine what you worship.

First, you must look at your time. One of the greatest indicators of what we value is based upon how we spend our time. Take a look at your week and evaluate what is dominating or controlling your time and you will quickly see what is in the driver’s seat of your time.

Second, look at your bank account. Next to time, how we spend our money and resources greatly reveals what is of most importance to us. Things we value require money and as we look at our spending, we quickly see what is in control.

Third, you need to evaluate what consumes your mind. What do you think about most? What controls your attitude and mindset? One of the best ways to see what or who we worship comes down to what drives our thinking. Today, what did you think about the most? Give an honest evaluation and I bet you will see very quickly what is most important to you.

Finally, you must evaluate your passions. The best way to know what you worship is to look at what stirs your heart. What gets you out of bed in the morning? What gets you excited? What motivates you? Our heart is the best indicator God has given us to see what is most important to us.

The truth is, only One is worthy of all worship. Who is that One? The God of all creation! The King of all Kings! Psalm 96:4-5 says this, ““For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens.”

All the things of this world are fleeting. The Bible  tells  us  that the world and its desires are passing away, but the person who does the will of God lives forever. As the Psalmist said, “The gods of the nations are worthless idols, but God, the One  true God is great and greatly to be praised.” I love the Scripture from Psalm 86:8-11 that says, “There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. For you are great and do wondrous  things; you alone are God. Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.”

Today, give yourself completely to God for He and He alone is worthy of all worship and praise!
