Senior moments from the Newcastle Senior Center

DOROTHY’S DABLINGS/ Senior Citizen happenings

Hello Newcastle seniors!I hope all of you are enjoying this beautiful Fall weather. I have said this but I think it is worth repeating. I love Autumn. It is so lovely. One thing I think makes it so special is that it comes just before the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. That is always special. We have a large family and everyone (those who can) gather at our house for both holidays. Family is so important.

Our annual fundraiser will be held Friday, October 19. There will be a $5.00 admission price payable at the door. As you may know, we have two fundraisers a year. This is of great importance for the support of the Newcastle Senior Center. As always, Danny Watters and his Bluegrass Band will be here to perform for us. They give their time and talent for us and there is no way we can ever thank them enough. This band is not just Bluegrass. They do gospel and country also and have been known to even do a little comedy. Or maybe a lot of comedy. You don’t know what they might do. The band members are Danny, Jerry Wickersham, Nathan Sanders and Sam Henderson. They are very versatile. Danny’s nine year old granddaughter, Lilly, will sing a song or two and also play her fiddle. None of you want to miss that, she is a very talented little lady. Jerry Wickersham will do about a 30 minute segment featuring his own original songs. There is also a gospel band, Chosen Few, with Larry Hay, who will also entertain us. Sounds like a great night with a lot of really good music.

There will be several things to bid on, door prizes, a 50-50 jar and probably other things to do. And now about the food. There will be some good things show up for your pleasure. The food we will be serving is: BBQ Brisket Sandwiches with Chips, $3.00, Frito Chili Pie, $3.00, Loaded Baked Potato, (Chili, Cheese, Butter, Sour Cream, Chives, Bacon) $4.00, Nachos $3.00, Cinnamon Rolls, $2.00, Chocolate Sheet Cake, $1.00 and Pop (variety) $1.00. This event welcomes everyone. It is not just for seniors.

Do you need a ride to the center or a meal delivered? Just call 387-2100 for either. The van will take you to and from the center free of charge. We also deliver meals if you are unable to come to the center. Our van is handicapped equipped. There are other services available but there may be a small charge.

Lunch is served to seniors 55 or older Monday thru Friday, 11:30 a.m.-12:30p.m. We have a wonderful salad bar, vegetables, fruit, homemade soup, bread, melons, meat, dessert, coffee and tea. And it is all home type cooking. We have a domino game going every day. Come and join in. You don’t even have to know how, someone will teach you. Good deal, huh?

There are several activities for seniors at the library for you to check out. They love helping seniors, children, and everyone in between.

The holidays will be here soon. Do you need more room for a day or a weekend? The center is available for rent and it just might be the answer to your space problem. The charge is $100 per day with a refund of $25 if the center is clean when your event is over. It is decorated for each season. There will be a large Christmas tree, beautifully decorated for your pleasure. The days around the holidays will be rented soon so get your name on the calendar.

Everyone have a happy and blessed week. I will see you next week.

“To know the strength of your anchor, you’ve got to feel the fury of the storm. Lord may we all be anchored to your presence this day.” Hebrews 6:19
