Dwayne ‘Andy’ Anderson

Dwayne “Andy” Anderson died May 13, 2023, in Norman, Oklahoma, at the age of 79 years 11 months and nine days.

Andy was born June 4, 1943, in Purcell, Oklahoma, to Otis and Alma Ruth (Burden) Anderson. He was raised in Wayne, graduating from Wayne High School in 1961. That same year, Andy was inducted into the United States Navy, proudly serving two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievements and was honorably discharged in 1966.

Andy then started his law enforcement career at the Norman Police Department, serving as an officer for two years. In 1968, Andy joined the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, serving as a State Trooper, and the last 14 years of his career in McClain County.

Andy married Linda Barger in 1969, and made their home in Wayne, where they raised their family, and where Linda taught school.

In 1988, Andy was elected Mc-Clain County Sheriff, and served until his retirement in 1998. Andy was an active member of the community, a devout member of the Church of Christ, and was a man of the highest moral character.

Andy is preceded in death by: his parents, Otis and Alma Ruth Anderson; his daughter, Amy Wren Unsell; his brother, Gary Anderson; and his nephew, Kent Anderson. Survivors include: his wife Linda; his son, Miles Anderson; his son, Clay Anderson; his grandson, Ace Anderson; his brother, Roger Anderson; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 18, 2023, at the First Baptist Church in Purcell. Interment followed at Rosedale Cemetery, entrusted to the care of Wadley’s Funeral Service. Online condolences may be made, and service live streamed at www.wadleysfuneralservice.com.
