Steve Buchanan

Steve Buchanan, 77, of Blanchard, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 3, 2025, surrounded by family.

Stephen Leonard Buchanan was born June 21, 1948, in Oklahoma City. He was the oldest of five children from a blended family of Roy Buchanan Jr., Eleanor Whitener, and her second husband Kenneth Tice.

He was raised in Oklahoma City where he attended school, graduating from the old Classen High School with the Class of 1966. Steve then answered the call in service to his country and joined the United States Army.

By chance, he reconnected with an old friend from his Foster Baptist Church youth group. Her name was Barbara Louise Hawkins, and they were the perfect couple. Steve knew she was the one and so he married her on July 7, 1967, in Oklahoma City. They first made their home in Oklahoma City, before settling near Tuttle where they raised their daughters, Stephanie and Marcia.

Steve worked for the United States Postal Service for many years, serving as Postmaster in Tuttle and later in Blanchard, retiring in 2004. Steve was a man with many talents. He was extremely well organized and enjoyed tending to his yard and working in his shop. He was a gifted artist. He enjoyed woodworking and crafting stained glass, and he shared his many talents with his family and friends.

Steve loved life and experienced much throughout his life. His greatest legacy was his faith in Jesus Christ. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church Newcastle where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School and led Bible studies for many years. He served faithfully as the church building manager for more than 10 years, and he genuinely loved his church family. He cherished Barbara, his girls and especially his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed!

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Roy Buchanan Jr. and Eleanor Ann Whitener; stepfather Kenneth Tice; and two brothers, David Scott Buchanan and Raymond Tice.

Steve is survived by: his loving wife Barbara Buchanan of the home; his daughters, Stephanie Brooks and husband Steve of Mustang, and Marcia Shottenkirk and husband Jerry of Mustang; sister, Neva Parker of Oklahoma City; brother, Gene Tice and wife Deena of Yukon; his pride and joy, grandchildren, Kaylyn Lindley and husband Lt. Tristan Lindley, Kaleb Brooks, Sage Brooks, Molly Shottenkirk, and Jack Shottenkirk; great-grandson, Beau Lindley; and a host of other family and friends.

A viewing was from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2025, in Tri-City. The family received friends from 4-6 p.m.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Newcastle First Baptist Church. Burial followed at the Newcastle Memory Gardens.
