NPS forced to test security issues

Just one day after giving her State of the School presentation to members of the chamber Interim Superintendent Kristi Ferguson dealt with potential threats firsthand.

Prior to the homecoming parade, Friday, Sept. 28 a student notified a staff member that another student brought a gun into the field house. The staff immediately notified administration and police were called.

“The unloaded BB gun was secured by law enforcement and the student was taken into custody and later released to their guardian. Law enforcement will be determining if any charges will be filed. NPS will follow the student discipline policy,” Ferguson said.

“It is important to note that every person involved in reporting today followed the correct reporting steps. While no one was ever in any danger and we are not in school on Fridays, it is critical that we continue to stress the importance with our children that if you see something, say something,” she added.

Another incident Wednesday, Oct. 3, a student made a threat towards fellow classmates while in class.

According to Ferguson the administration immediately notified the police, and still continued to work closely with the NPS to ensure student and staff safety.

“We continue to ask that all students say something when they see or hear something,” Ferguson reiterated.
