Archaeology Day at the Wichita Tribal History Center

Anadarko – Ever wondered what archaeologists do? Want to learn how people make arrowheads and other stone tools? Interested in learning more about Wichita tribal history? On Saturday, Sept. 15, you’ll have a chance to learn about all of that and more!

The Wichita and Affiliated Tribes and archaeologists with the University of Oklahoma will host an Archaeology Day for members of the Anadarko community. This educational event, which is open to the public with no admission charge, will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wichita Tribal History Center, 32210 Country Street 2670 (north of Wichita Travel Plaza on Highway 281), Anadarko, Oklahoma.

There will be plenty of archaeology-focused activities for the whole family, including flintknapping (stone tool making), atlatl (spear) throwing, an archaeological sand box “dig” and ground penetrating radar demonstrations. Artifacts from ancestral Wichita archaeological sites will be on display and OU archaeologists be around to answer any questions you have about archaeology.

Archaeology experts will also be on hand to identify any artifacts or strange objects brought in, but please note, no monetary values will be set on any items.

Enjoy activities and learn about Wichita culture and history. For more information or accommodations, contact Sarah Trabert at strabert@ou.edu.

This event is sponsored by the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, the Department of Anthropology at the University of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Archeological Survey and OU Libraries.
