Celebrating Grandparent’s Day on a budget
Many of us enjoy showing our grandparents love year-round, but Sunday, Sept. 9, is the official holiday to celebrate them: Grandparent’s Day. The U.S. Census Bureau reports there are 65 million grandparents in the United States. If you need something low-key (and, more importantly, low-cost), the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants offers five inexpensive but clever suggestions so showing your appreciation won’t send you into financial panic.
• Bake up some memories. Get everyone in the kitchen to bake and decorate cookies with each other. Use a recipe from your grandma or grandpa for even more nostalgia and bring out your phone to capture those memories.
• Pull out the craft supplies. Show your grandparents how much you care by penning your own poem or making them a personalized greeting card. You can also make your own gift with craft supplies you might already have around. Pinterest offers several tips on DIY crafts.
• Free up some of your grandparent’s time. Create a chore coupon book that they can cash in any time. Wash their car, rake their yard or mow their lawn to save them some time and show them you care.
• Find your local events. Check your local newspaper or consult Facebook events to find cheap or low-cost activities for your family to attend. You’ll spend less money and you could leave with homemade gifts for the grandparents in your life.
• Go play outside. Show how much you care by arranging a fishing trip with the grandkids. If cookouts are more their speed, bring the ingredients for a great cookout and give your grandparents the night off.
