Newcastle High School’s Academic Bowl team placed as Runner-Up at Conference on Friday and Runner-Up at Regionals on Saturday. They will now go to the Area Tournament in January. The Town of Goldsby had to impose a mandatory water rationing for one day a week on outside watering last summer. Mayor Mike Herrin said as bad as things were this summer, you have to expect them to be bad next summer, but the Town is steadily working towards a solution.

City holds ground breaking ceremony for new wastewater treatment plant
City, State and construction officials gathered at 4:30 p.m. Monday at N.E. 16th Street and Portland Avenue for a ground breaking ceremony at the site where the new $51,819,143.58 wastewater treatment plant is being built. From left are: Brandon Wall, P.E., president of Wall Engineering; Newcastle City Manager Kevin Self; council member Kimberly Sutton; council member Marci White; Mayor Karl Nail; Vice-Mayor Mike Fullerton; State Senator Jessica Garvin (R-SD43); council member Gene Reid; Wastewater Plant Manager Nate Shirley; and Public Works Superintendent Jim Miller.

Never forget that freedom is not free
As we just observed Veterans Day on Nov. 11 and remembered the many heroes who have bravely defended the United States of America, I am filled with deep gratitude. Like all Americans, I am thankful to all who have answered the call to serve, and especially to the estimated 300,000 living Oklahomans who have fought for our freedom and advanced our democracy.

CASA volunteers sworn-in
During a Wednesday, November 8 afternoon ceremony in Cleveland County, six volunteers took the oath of office to be sworn in as Court Appointed Special Advocates for McClain, Garvin and Cleveland counties. Special Judge Kimberly K. Conyers presided. Swornin were Mark Malthaner, Cindy Merrick, Mary Davis, Rebecca Miller, Debbie McKinney and AJ Payne. They will advocate for those who are victims of child abuse, sexual abuse, and/or neglect. CASA volunteers are trained to discover what is in the best interest of the child and diligently pursue positive outcomes until each child is placed in a safe, permanent home.

Those in mental health crisis need help quickly
With about three months left until the beginning of session, bill filing is underway. I filed the first Senate measure of the upcoming session, Senate Bill 1197, to designate the section of U.S. Highway 77 beginning on the east side of the James C. Nance Bridge extending through Lexington to the intersection of Moffatt Road in Cleveland County as the Col. John L. Smith Medal of Honor Recipient Memorial Highway.
