Student injured while attempting to walk marked SH-62 crosswalk

On Thursday, September 24, 2026, at approximately 7:29 a.m., officers with the Newcastle Police Department responded to an automobile-pedestrian collision in the area of State Highway 62 and Stan Patty Boulevard in Newcastle.

Upon officers’ arrival, it was learned that a 16-year-old Newcastle High School student was crossing SH62, near Stan Patty Boulevard, in the designated marked crosswalk. A vehicle traveling northbound on SH62 failed to stop for the crosswalk signal, and the female student was struck by the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene, and the student was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition.

Newcastle Police said this is an ongoing investigation. They’ll provide additional updates as more information becomes available.

Newcastle Public Schools made a statement, saying, “Our hearts are with our Racer students and their families following an accident this morning in which one of our students was struck by a vehicle while crossing on Main Street (SH62). Law enforcement and EMS responded to the scene, and the student was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. At this time, we do not have an update on the student’s condition.

“Our thoughts are with the student, their family and everyone affected by this incident. We ask our Racer community to please respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time and keep them in your thoughts.”

The statement thanked responders for their efforts and assistance during the incident.
