The Racers turned their wins and losses to the positive side Friday night with a road win against Shawnee, 62-14.

Newcastle, now with a 3 win, 2 loss record on the year, dominated the Wolves, scoring 34 points to Shawnee’s 7 by halftime. The Racers added another 21 points while allowing only one touchdown through the third quarter, and then a final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Racer Head Coach Bo Bradshaw said the Racers struggled early in the game to keep their footing on the slick turf at Shawnee’s field.

“Our defense played really well, only allowing 38 total passing yards on 21 attempts,” Bradshaw said. “They also forced three takeaways, two interceptions, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

Bradshaw said the Newcastle linemen were more dominant than their opponents for the second week, so the game was in the Racers’ control.

Bradshaw said the special teams play was “massive.”

The Racers’ kick off receiving team was steady and gave Newcastle good field position.

“Punter Deacon Lyles downed a punt out of bounds on the Shawnee one-yard line,” Bradshaw said. “Our field goal kicker, Coltyn Biggerstaff, went two of two on field goals, one from 41 yards out.”

Bradshaw said the kick off coverage team played very well.

“Our offense came alive with many explosive pass plays,” he said. “Duke Berchtold threw for three touchdowns, and Deacon Lyles threw for two touchdowns. Alec Shumard caught three touchdown passes on the night.”

Player of the Week honor went to Preston Scagnetti. Offensive Player of the Week was Berchtold, and Defensive Player of the Week was Tamir Tease.

Special Teams Player of the Week was Carston Pueppke. The Hammer Award went to Scagnetti, and Cody Nix received the Knockdown Award. He had eight.

Practice Player of the Week was Chason Burnside, and Lifter of the Week was William “Billy” Hardin.

Biggerstaff went 2/2 field goals. Tease had one interception, and seven tackles. Darmari Morgan-Chancellor had 10 tackles and one forced fumble.

Scagnetti had 10 tackles and one touchdown. Harmon Warmuth had seven tackles and one sack.

Berchtold had six receptions for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Montre McGlugritch had three receptions for 122 yards and one touchdown.

Newcastle hosts the Lawton MacArthur Highlanders tomorrow (Friday) night. Bradshaw said Lawton is currently 1-4 on the year, but they’ve had difficult opponents so far.

“They are a physical team, they run a hurry up offense, and they want to run the ball,” Bradshaw said.

He added that Newcastle has had two big games with them in the past two seasons, and their defense is physical and athletic.

He said, “They are well coached and have a strong tradition.”
