The McClain County 4-H Youth Development Program is seeking a dedicated volunteer to serve as a Shotgun Coach for its growing Oklahoma 4-H Shooting Sports program. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of young people while helping them develop safe firearm handling skills, sportsmanship, responsibility, and confidence.
McClain County 4-H offers shooting sports opportunities to youth ages 10 and older and is looking for an adult volunteer who is passionate about mentoring youth and supporting educational programs. According to the McClain County 4-H handbook, youth participating in the shotgun discipline must be at least 10 years old and are eligible to compete in skeet, trap, and sporting clays events.
Becoming a 4-H Shotgun Coach is a straightforward process. Interested individuals must:
• Complete the Oklahoma 4-H Volunteer Application
• Successfully pass a background check
• Attend and complete the required Oklahoma 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Training, a two-day certification course.
Once certified, the volunteer will be authorized to conduct shotgun practices and attend shotgun competitions for McClain County 4-H members. Training and program support are provided and shooting sports equipment and supplies are available through the county program.
Individuals with experience in shotgun sports, hunting, firearms safety, or youth mentoring are encouraged to apply. Previous coaching experience is not required; the Oklahoma 4-H Shooting Sports training provides the instruction and certification needed to serve as a coach.
