It wasn’t an easy win for the Carl Albert Titans as Newcastle visited Del City to begin a new football season. The game’s 31-21 score could easily have been a three-point game, as the Racers had two chances inside the Carl Albert five-yard line.
Carl Albert prevailed by 31-21, extending their multi-season win streak to 54. The Racers pulled out all stops in the third quarter, after being held scoreless in the first half.
Newcastle intercepted two passes, one of which was in the endzone, preventing a Carl Albert touchdown. Both interceptions were by senior Ashton Shumard. Head Coach Bo Bradshaw said the Racers also had two big pass plays for touchdowns from Duke Berchtold to Montre McGlugritch, and a touchdown run by Ben Rogers. These were all in the third quarter.
Bradshaw said the start of the game was “fairly sloppy,” with both teams having players who were cramping, and a lot of penalties being made that “should have been avoided.”
Carl Albert scored 13 points in the second quarter, 15 in the third, and three points in the fourth.
“Going against us, we allowed a big screen play to the running back for a touchdown,” Bradshaw said. “And they stopped us from scoring inside of the five-yard line twice.”
The Player of the Week for the Racers was Shumard. He had two interceptions for the game, and Carl Albert did not have any interceptions all season last year, according to Bradshaw.
The Defensive Player of the Week is Damari Morgan-Chancellor, while the Offensive Player of the Week is Duke Berchtold. Special Teams Player of the Week is Coltyn Biggerstaff. The Hammer Award went to Morgan-Chancellor. Knockdowns went to Landin Judkins. Practice Player of the Week was Max Heskew, and Weight Lifter of the Week was Morgan-Chancellor. Newcastle hosts Tuttle tonight (Thursday). They are the defending Class 4A State Champions. Bradshaw said they are a well coached team and they play very hard. He said, “They know their systems and trust them. It should be a good game.”
