Last Thursday night’s scrimmages with Newcastle, Perkins-Tryon, Bethany and Putnam City provided coaches a live look at the Racers before they head into Friday night’s Week 0 game against Carl Albert.
Newcastle’s offense had several highlights, according to Head Coach Bo Bradshaw. He said Alec Shumard had a really good day at wide Receiver, and Ben Rogers ran the ball well behind the offensive line.
“Duke Berchtold and Deacon Lyles both played well at quarterback,” Bradshaw said. “Duke threw for two touchdwons in the half game. One was on a deep pass to Alec Shumard and another one was to Jerrell Manuel on the last play of the game to win 14-7.”
Bradshaw said the defense started out slow and then picked it up.
“Putnam City scored in its first drive, and then we got two stops, one being a redzone stop where Putnam City went for it on 4th down.”
Special teams looked good, according to the coach.
“Everyone knew their job,” he said. “Chris Perez opened up the scrimmage with a kick off. Connor Espinosa made a point after attempt. Coltyn Biggerstaff had a good kick off, and then freshman Trey Widdison made the second PAT to end the scrimmage.”
Newcastle opens the season with a trip to Midwest City to play against Carl Albert tomorrow (Friday) night.
Bradshaw, a Carl Albert alum, said he expects the game to be tough and physical. He said the team that blocks and tackles the best will win.
