Construction underway at PLS Newcastle

Construction underway at PLS Newcastle

Construction is now underway on enhancements to the Newcastle Public Library, part of Pioneer Library System’s (PLS) Customer Experience Master Plan.

A PLS spokesperson said, “The library remains open during regular hours throughout the project, ensuring continued access to the services and programs the community relies on. Any significant closures or service changes will be announced through the library’s website and social media channels.”

Executive Director Lisa Wells said, “Our Customer Experience Master Plan updates position us to respond thoughtfully to the evolving needs of our communities. Through strong partnerships with our municipalities and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars, we can direct investments where they will have the greatest benefit for residents throughout our service area. As our communities grow and change, so must the dynamic library that serves them.”

The updates will bring modern, flexible spaces to the library, including a Maker Lab and meeting spaces for handson learning and skill-building, as well as a new outdoor program space and an expanded children’s area. Together, these additions are designed to create more opportunities for community engagement and collaboration while pre- serving Newcastle Public Library’s role as a trusted community hub.

Wells also said, “The rapid growth of Newcastle underscores the need for continued investment in library services that support families and prepare residents for the future.

“This 2,000-square-foot expansion will create dedicated space for early literacy and children’s programming, helping strengthen school readiness and support improved literacy outcomes for Oklahoma children. A new Maker Lab will also provide hands-on opportunities to build STEAM skills and prepare people of all ages for the demands of the modern workforce.”

She said this project, in partnership with the City of Newcastle, is the second project in PLS’s systemwide Customer Experience Master Plan, a strategy to thoughtfully evaluate and enhance library experiences across its communities.

Together, these efforts are transforming the already treasured Newcastle branch into a dynamic destination where people can explore new ideas, access technology, connect with others, and pursue learning at every stage of life.

Pioneer Library System (PLS) states that it empowers people and communities through innovation, engagement, and lifelong learning across 10 communities in Cleveland, McClain, and Pottawatomie counties. Through its branches, Information Stations in rural communities, 24-Hour Libraries, and digital access, PLS provides equitable access to information, technology, educational opportunities, and enriching experiences. Furthermore, they state as a trusted community hub, PLS fosters curiosity, creativity, workforce development, and connections.

By removing barriers to access and expanding opportunities for learning and engagement, PLS helps individuals and communities grow and thrive.
