Groundbreaking held for NHS Baseball, Softball addition

Newcastle High School softball and baseball players stood out in the 105-degree heat Wednesday, August 12 to watch and then later turn dirt on a new addition (Related photos on page 8).

Dr. Cathy Walker, superintendent of schools for Newcastle, said when built the new facility will have boys baseball and girls softball locker rooms, a coaches office, ticket booth, an athletic trainers area, a place for referees, and storage. The ticket booth area also provides a more specialized entrance for fans, she said.

The 2022 bond issue plans originally called for an expenditure of $500,000; however, conservative budgeting and expenses on other bond issue projects, provided for the school system to allot $2.5 million for the ball field addition. Walker said the school managed the other bond dollars and was able to add to this project to make it work.
