As the Summer Learning Challenge (SLC) approaches its August 15 conclusion with PioneerLibrarySystem(PLS), the community has come together to achieve an incredible milestone: 20 million minutes of reading and learning logged acrossthethree-countyservice area.
This collective achievement means the Pioneer Library System Foundation will donate bookstochildrenenrolled in WIC programs throughout Cleveland, McClain, and Pottawatomie Counties, which expanded access to books and helping build home libraries for local families.
Since May 1, thousands of participants of all ages have committed to daily learning, building habits that support literacy, curiosity, and personal growth.
From reading books and listening to audiobooks to attending library programs and exploring new skills, the community has demonstrated that learning takes many forms, and every minute counts.
While the program is nearing its end, there is still time for individuals to complete their personal challenge goals. Participants can continue logging minutes through August 15, including any past reading or learning they may not have yet recorded. Reaching the 1,000-point milestone unlocks completion prizes, which can be picked up at any PLS branch.
Even those who started late or fell behind are encouraged to finish strong. With retroactive logging available, participants can catch up on missed days and still experience the satisfaction of completing the challenge.
SLC not only celebrates individual achievement but also reinforces the importance of consistent learning habits. By dedicating just 20 minutes a day, participants help prevent the “summer slide,” maintaining academic skills and returning to school or daily routines with confidence.
Adults played a vital role in this year’s success, contributing minutes, modeling lifelong learning, and directly supporting the community goal.
Their participation underscores that learning is not limited by age and that collective effort can create meaningful impact. Participants who have reached prize milestones are encouraged to visit their local library soon to collect their rewards and celebrate their accomplishment with staff.
