The water is only approximately 3 feet deep

No swimming, jumping from bridge at Veterans Park pond

The City of Newcastle has received multiple complaints regarding children and teenagers jumping from the top of the bridge into the pond at Veterans Park. Parks & Recreation Director Kyle Marks said this has become a growing safety issue, and they ask parents and guardians to address it immediately.

“The water beneath the bridge is only approximately three feet deep, and even when the pond is completely full, the depth is only about four feet,” Marks said. “Jumping from the bridge into water this shallow creates a serious risk of severe injury, including head, neck, back, and spinal injuries.”

Marks said in addition, the pond is a fishing pond. Fishing hooks, fishing line, and other fishing-related debris may be present in and around the water, creating additional hazards for anyone entering the pond.

“Please remember that swimming, wading, and entering the pond are not permitted at any time,” he said.

Law enforcement has already been contacted regarding this activity, and City staff continue to receive reports and complaints from concerned residents.

Marks said, “Parents and guardians, please take a moment to discuss these dangers with your children. These rules are in place to protect the safety of everyone who visits the park and to prevent a serious injury from occurring. Thank you for your cooperation in helping keep Newcastle’s parks safe for all visitors.”
