Newcastle Emergency Management says you need a 5-Minute Go Kit

Severe weather can develop rapidly, leaving little time to gather essential items. Preparing a small “go kit” in advance ensures you can move quickly to shelter with the supplies you need to remain safe and self-sufficient during and immediately after a storm.

In order to help you be prepared, Newcastle Emergency Management has these tips for your 5-Minute Go Kit.

BE PREPARED

Your go kit should be stored in an easily accessible location and reviewed regularly. At a minimum, consider including the following:

• Flashlight and extra batteries – Reliable lighting is critical during power outages, especially if you need to move safely to shelter at night.

• Phone charger or power bank – Maintaining communication and access to emergency information is essential. Ensure backup batteries are charged in advance of severe weather.

• Sturdy shoes – Keep a pair near your bed to protect your feet from debris such as broken glass or structural damage following a storm.

• Medications and essential medical items – Include any daily prescriptions or critical supplies that may be needed if you are in your shelter area for an extended period.

• Copies of important documents – Store copies of identification, insurance information, and other critical records in a waterproof container or sealed bag.

Additional items such as a small first aid kit, bottled water, and a whistle for signaling can further enhance your preparedness.

Taking time now to assemble a simple go kit can significantly improve your ability to respond quickly and safely when severe weather threatens.

Newcastle Emergency Management said they have an additional preparedness reminder: Be sure to identify where your 5-minute go kit will be stored and ensure all household members know how to access it.
