Members of the business community and local residents gathered at Newcastle Christian Church on Tuesday, March 24 to mingle, eat lunch, and sample desserts, all for a good cause.
They were in attendance at this year’s Racers for Excellence Sweet Scholars Luncheon.
The Racers for Excellence fundraiser is a way for the chamber members to show their unwavering commitment to education, said Chamber Executive Director/CEO Gayla Riddle. To raise money, desserts are donated for both a tasting and a silent auction. Attendees pay a fee and taste all the desserts they want.
The desserts are accompanied by other silent auction items that are donated by area businesses and individuals.
This year’s luncheon raised just more than $5,000. Scholarship applications are due April 24. They can be mailed to P.O Box 1006 or emailed to [email protected].
Community Scholarship Namesakes After the annual Racers for Excellence Sweet Scholars Luncheon each year, applications are made available, and then scholarships are given out to four deserving Newcastle High School senior students by the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce. The scholarships are in the names of community members Mona Brite, Patti Manness, Cindy Frizzell, and Gene Reid.
