Newcastle educator-official selected for State Basketball Tournament
When Newcastle boys and girls Racer basketball teams went to the State Tournament this year, they weren’t the only ones from Newcastle who were there.
Newcastle Middle School teacher and coach Chance “Coach” Scott was recently selected to officiate the Oklahoma Secondary School Athletic Association 2A-4A Basketball State Tournament, marking the fifth time he has earned the honor during his officiating career.
Coach Scott has been officiating basketball for 17 years, building a strong reputation for professionalism and consistency on the court. In addition to basketball, he is also an experienced baseball umpire and has been selected to work the Oklahoma High School Baseball State Tournament twice. Scott also serves as the Director of Officials for the Central Oklahoma Youth Basketball Association (COYBA).
While many know him as Mr. Scott, he prefers a different title.
“I go by Coach Scott,” he said with a smile. “Mr. Scott was my grandpa.”
Beyond his officiating work, Coach Scott is nearing a milestone in education. He is currently in his 25th year in education, with the last 20 years spent at Newcastle Public Schools.
For 18 years, Scott taught at Newcastle High School, where he instructed students in Fundamentals of Technology, Broadcasting, Accounting, and several other courses. Two years ago, he transitioned to Newcastle Middle School, where he now teaches Yearbook and Fundamentals of Technology.
In addition to teaching, Coach Scott remains deeply involved in student activities and athletics. He currently serves as the Junior High Head Fast Pitch Softball Coach and as the BPA (Business Professionals of America) Advisor.
Scott’s connection to Newcastle runs deeper than the classroom and athletic fields. Both of his daughters, Aurora Fisher and Addison Scott, are graduates of Newcastle High School. His family legacy in the community continues with his grandson, who currently attends Newcastle Early Childhood Center.
Through decades of teaching, coaching, and officiating, Coach Scott has made a lasting impact on students and athletes throughout the Newcastle community. His latest State Tournament selection highlights not only his experience but also the respect he has earned across Oklahoma’s high school athletics programs.
