New drop box now at Tri City Hope Center

A donation box for nonperishable food items has been put into place at Tri City Hope Center in Newcastle.

The need for a box by itself became evident as nonperishable food item donations had been mixed in with other donations being left by the public.

Tri City Hope Center Director and founder Shannon Kowals said donations have been down lately, and she encourages the public to help out with items such as cereal, canned fruit and vegetables, and boxed foods such as macaroni and cheese.

“The way things have been going with gas and food going up, the pantry is getting slim,” Kowals said. “Because of the economy, many of those we help are having to cut back on something.”

Kowals said Tri City Hope Center, which is open on Thursday, is still giving aid to more than 100 families per week.

She encourages the public to leave donations any time, and reminds donors that it’s not just today, but all year long.

Tri City Hope Center is a Christian-based family choice pantry where those in need are able to select a specific number of products from the facility’s stocked shelves.
