Newcastle Board of Education member Jeremy Gilbertson has moved from the school district and will no longer serve on the School Board.

Dr. Cathy Walker, NPS superintendent, said, “Due to a recent relocation within Newcastle, Mr. Gilbertson is no longer eligible to continue serving as the Ward Five representative. While we are sad to see him step away from the board, we are incredibly grateful for the time, dedication, and leadership he brought to our district.”

Walker said NPS is now looking for a community member who lives in Ward Five and is interested in serving the school district.

Board members must complete State required instruction on education issues in order to serve. They must agree to a Code of Ethics and Conduct concerning the students’ welfare, educational issues and training, and respect for the laws of Oklahoma and the United States. They are required to work towards legislative goals, policies and strategic plans for the District, while delegating the administrative functions of the District.

They also must respect confidentiality of privileged information, while encouraging the free expression of opinion by board and staff members and seeking communications with the public outside the District. They are to be cooperative, recognize and reward excellence in student achievement, teacher performance, and administrative leadership, and refrain from using the Board position for personal or partisan gain.

Candidates must have been awarded a high school diploma or certificate of high school equivalency. They cannot have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving embezzlement or a felony under the laws of the state or of the United States. They cannot have entered a plea of guilty or nolo contendere to a misdemeanor involving embezzlement or a felony, or a similar conviction in another state.

The School Board will be looking over applications and making a decision for Gilbertson’s replacement in the next couple of months.

“Mr. Gilbertson has been a valued member of the board, always keeping the success of our students and schools at the center of his work,” said Dr. Walker. “I truly enjoyed working with Mr. Gilbertson while he served on the board.

“His insight and leadership were very valuable to the community as he helped move our district forward.”

Walker said individuals wishing to learn more about the application process and requirements can visit the school district webpage for details.
