‘Foxy Lady’ is March Senior of the Month

Betty Caldwell or “Foxy Lady” as she is known, moved to Newcastle in 2025. She was born and raised in Lawton, along with one sister.

Photography and her pet skunk “Stinky” brought her a lot of enjoyment. She loved eating fried cheese sandwiches and fried chicken, but hated plucking the chickens. There were cookouts after church on Sundays and long walks with friends out in nature enjoying what God had made.

Life was especially good, she says, when they lived at the lake. There were leisurely walks that led to fishing areas or hang-out spots at the store.

Her mom’s life was always filled with helping others for no pay and that trait was passed on to Betty and her sister who passed it on to their kids.

As Betty grew, she found her first job at G.F. Wacher’s 5 and 10 (aka five and dime) for 75 cents an hour. She married, and had one son and one daughter. She also spent 13 years volunteering at the Lawton Food Bank and 25 years at the Carter Crane Homeless Shelter.

Betty said she would like to be remembered as a person who is always helping others, and her message to future generations is that love and kindness is never wasted.

She enjoys Newcastle, its opportunity to be of service to others, and especially the Newcastle Senior Citizens Center. Making new friends, learning new things, doing crafts, playing cards and bingo, and especially the food at the Center is just what she needed.

The Center is located at 504 OK-130, Newcastle, OK 73065, and their phone number is 405-387-2100. Meals are $5 each and include salad bar, entrée, drink, and dessert.
