Racer boys, girls are Regional Champs

On to Area Tourney with games against Carl Albert

Dominant performances were displayed by the Newcastle High School basketball teams at the Regional Tournament. The Racer girls had scores of 73-32 and 100-13 to become Regional Champions, and the Racer boys won their games 55-34 and 86-33.

Both teams will play Carl Albert in the Area Tournament.

In the girls’ championship, Newcastle took Altus to task. Amara King scored 22 points to lead the Racers offensively. Ziyah Sims had 14 points, Kalani Kindred had 12, and Lilly Taliaferro had 10. Jordyn Richardson and Emerson Marble both had 6 points, while Reagan Greenroyd added 3.

The girls had made their way to the Championship round by clobbering Southeast, 100-13. In the Southeast game, Jailiana Salas came out hot with 21 points for the Racers. Kindred had another double figure game with 20. Taliaferro hit for 15 points, while Ava Snider had 13.

Greenroyd had 10 points, and Sims had 8. Amara King had 6 points, Makayla Brown had 3, and Khloe Young and Emerson Marble had 2 each.

The Racers beat Lawton MacArthur, 55-34, in the Regionals Championship game. To get there, they beat Southeast by a score of 86-33. Newcastle led both teams throughout the entirety of the games.

In the Southeast Regional tourney opener, Kolton Brammer led Newcastle scoring with 20 points. Joey Folsom and Ivan Antwi-Donkor came next with 11 points each. Tony (TJ) Williams Jr. hit for 10 points. Owen Wright made 9. Harmon Warmuth had 8 and Alan Price added 6. Timothy Porter made 4 points, Cole Seely had 3, and Jon’Tre Sloan and Nathan Espino each had 2.

Against Lawton, Brammer again led team scoring with 20 points. Williams and Antwi-Donkor each had 11. Seely made 4 points, Deacon Lyles had 3, and Folsom, Wright and Sloan each had 2.

The Newcastle boys (24-2) play at 6 p.m., March 6 at Piedmont High School against Carl Albert (24-2). The opponent is fresh off their Regional Championship win against Bishop McGuinness, 66-45. Carl Albert’s only losses have come during tournament action from Class 6A teams Mustang and Edmond North.

The Newcastle girls (25-2) play at 6 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Edmond North against Carl Albert (23-4). Carl Albert’s losses have been in outof- state games in Arkansas to Southside Arkansas and Argyle, Texas, and to Class 2A number one-ranked Dale, and Midwest City.

In both the boys’ and girls’ Area games, the winners move forward to the State Tournament, and the losers play the next day against teams with one loss in the Consolation Championship to see who moves forward to the State Tournament.
