Regrouping, plan to try again
Bridge Creek Public Schools missed approving a bond issue February 10 by 35 votes — a percentage of 2.69%.
School bond issues in Oklahoma put to the voters must receive a 60% and above approval.
The Bridge Creek proposal mustered 753 yes votes and 561 no votes, just missing the mark, 57.31% to 42.69%.
BCPS Superintendent David Morrow wrote, “The bond did not pass — but the challenges that led us to run it are still here. Our enrollment is growing, our buildings are full, and the pressure on classrooms, safety, and infrastructure is real. These are not hypothetical issues. They are realities we deal with every day.”
Morrow states that the school continues to have a responsibility to provide safe, adequate, and modern facilities for its kids.
“We will regroup, adjust and come back with a plan that is better explained, better understood, and better aligned with what our community expects,” Morrow states.
Morrow said his door is open and he invites anyone with questions or concerns to come and talk with him.
The school system had requested $74,440,000 and projected no tax increase on area homeowners.
What would they build?
The funds were to be used to construct, furnish and equip a new high school with safe room.
It was planned to have 38 classrooms, two science labs, three specialty classrooms, a cafeteria, and parking. The bond issue also planned for a new open multipurpose space at the middle school, and two locker rooms.
