Racer boys, girls ending regular season strong, to host Districts

Pick-up games Tuesday bring Sweet Pea Championship match for girls

Newcastle’s boys and girls basketball teams will host the first round of Class 5A basketball playoffs. The Oklahoma Secondary School Athletic Association did not have tournament brackets up by press time on Tuesday.

Regular season play ended Friday night with Racer games against Altus. Both the Newcastle boys and girls won, completing regular season play with the girls finishing first in their District, and the boys finishing in second.

The Racer boys beat Altus, 82-26, dominating all four periods of the game. Kolton Brammer led scoring efforts for Newcastle with 22 points.

Joey Folsom and Owen Wright had 8 each, while Ivan Antwi-Donkor had 7 points. Alan Price and Deacon Lyles had 6 each. Cole Seely, Kael Brickman, and Harmon Warmuth had 5 points apiece. Tony (TJ) Williams Jr. and Jon’Tre Sloan had 4 points each, and Nathan Espino had 2.

The Racer girls beat Altus 70-33.

Both Racer teams also won last Thursday night when they played Tri-City rival Tuttle. The Racers won by a score of 53-49 and the girls won, 5630.

Brammer led scoring for the boys with 15 points. He was followed by Williams with 13. Antwi-Donkor had 10, and Seely, Price, Sloan and Lyles had 6 each.

The Newcastle girls were led in scoring by Jordyn Richardson. She had 15. Amara King had 12, and Reagan Greenroyd hit 9.

Ziyah Sims had 6, and Jailiana Salas and Lilly Taliaferro had 5 each. Emerson Marble and Khloe Young added 2 apiece.

After being beat earlier in the year by District 1 opponent Classen School of Advanced Studies, the Racers came back on February 10 to beat them in the second game, 53-49.

The win put Newcastle into second place in the District, just behind Del City and their 11-1 (now 12-1) District record. The Racers, who were 11-2 at the time and now 12-2, were Del City’s only loss, as the teams split games on the year.

In the Classen game, Brammer led scoring with 17 points. Antwi-Donkor was close behind with 16 points. Williams had 8, and Seely had 5. Price added 3, while Folsom and Wright each had 2.

A late addition to Newcastle’s schedule were Tuesday night pick-up games. The Racer girls were to play Grind Prep in a match which would have been played for the Championship of the Sweet Pea Tournament had it not been for snow and ice.

The boys were scheduled to play Norman-area private school Terra Verde.

These games were played after Newcastle Pacer print deadlines so their outcomes could not be reported.

District and Regionals are to be announced, and the Class 5A State Basketball Tournament is March 11-14.
