Parks and Recreation launches Director’s 100-Mile Challenge

The City of Newcastle Parks and Recreation Department has announced the launch of the Director’s 100‑Mile Challenge, a self-paced fitness initiative focused on goal achievement and long-term consistency.

The challenge runs April 18 through July 26 and requires participants to complete 100 miles within the 100-day challenge period. Miles may be logged by walking or running and can be completed anywhere, including trails, sidewalks, tracks, or treadmills.

Participants may finish the 100 miles early without penalty; however, all milestone rewards and finisher items will be distributed at the same time following the conclusion of the challenge.

“The Director’s 100-Mile Challenge was created to give individuals a clear goal and keep them motivated to finish, even as the weather warms up,” said Kyle Marks, Parks and Recreation Director.

Milestone rewards will be issued for completed distances:

• 25 miles – Cooling towel

• 50 miles – Drawstring backpack

• 75 miles – Running hat

• 100 miles – Finisher shirt and recognition “This challenge is also a strong way to carry people into 2026,” Marks added. “New Year’s resolutions often fade after the first few months, and this helps keep those goals relevant through the summer.”

The Director’s 100-Mile Challenge is the first in a series of wellness-focused challenges planned by the Parks and Recreation Department and is supported by local sponsors.

Registration is open now. Participants may begin logging miles when the challenge officially starts on April 18.
