Northbound I-44 down to 1 lane at S.W. 74th Street

Newcastle-area travelers on northbound U.S. Interstate 44 going to Oklahoma City are probably experiencing stopand- go travel this week.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation closed I-44 ramps there and narrowed traffic to one lane at S.W. 74th St. on Monday. This will continue through late February.

ODOT said the eastbound I-44 (runs north) on and offramps to S.W. 74th St. (mm 114 to OKC Community College) is now closed and eastbound I-44 (runs north) has been narrowed to one lane at S.W. 74th St. ODOT said this will aid them in completing critical steps for the I44/I-35/SH-152/Airport Rd. interchange reconstruction project. Drivers can expect major delays in the area and should consider an alternate route.

The Oklahoma Transportation Commission awarded the $18.4 million contract to Allen Contracting Inc./Shell Construction Co., Inc. in December 2024. Completion is anticipated in early 2026, weather permitting.
