Girls continue to be undefeated in Oklahoma competition
Newcastle’s girls took part in the Mustang Invitational Tournament over the Christmas and New Year’s break, beating Class 6A Piedmont, 64-57, Class 6A Edmond North, 51-44, and Class 2A number four-ranked Hartshorne, 54-38.
Four Racers scored in double figures to help lead the team to the opening tournament win against Piedmont. Jordyn Richardson led scoring with 14 points. Reagan Greenroyd and Kalani Kindred each had 13 points, while Amara King had 12.
Also scoring were: Jailiana Salas and Lilly Taliaferro with four apiece, and Khloe Young and Ava Snider with 2 each.
In the match against Edmond North, the Racers were led in scoring by Kindred. She had a total of 23 points, but went on a streak in the third and fourth quarters hitting 17 of those.
King had nine points for Newcastle, while Greenroyd added 8 points. Salas hit six points, Richardson had 4, and Sims had 1.
In the Championship game, the Racers were down by one point after the first period of play, but then dominated in the second and third periods to take the lead.
Newcastle was behind 9-8 after the first, but then scored 15 points to Hartshorne’s 10 in the second, and another 20 in the third to Hartshorne’s 9. The Racers ended the game in the fourth period, holding Hartshorne to only 9 points while scoring 10 of their own.
Kindred again led scoring for the Racers, this time hitting 17 points. King was close behind with 15. Richardson had 7, while Salas had 6. Most of Richardson’s points came on a string of free throws in the third and fourth periods where she hit 5 of 6. Sims added 4 points, Greenroyd had 3, and Taliaferro had 2.
The Racers also took a holiday break trip to Phoenix, Arizona, December 18-22 to take part in the Nike Tournament of Champions. There, they experienced their only two losses of the year.
The Racers were beat by Bishop McNamara, 56-37, and by St. Mary’s New York, 6853. They won games against Homewood Flossmoor, Illinois, 56-41, and Mater Dei, 61-35.
Newcastle now has an overall record of 7-2 and a 4-0 record against Class 5A competition. They are undefeated playing against teams from Oklahoma.
They began a stretch of games playing Class 5A teams. This began Tuesday against Santa Fe South. They are scheduled to play Bishop McGuinness on January 12, and Classen SAS on the 13th.
