Newcastle Library is among beneficiaries
Early in November, Veterans Park in Newcastle came alive with laughter and activity as more than 200 children and caregivers participated in the 3rd Annual Royal Games. The event was hosted by the Pioneer Library System Foundation.
The Royal Games raised nearly $5,000 to support programming at the Pioneer Library System’s Blanchard, Newcastle, and Purcell Public Libraries.
Families enjoyed a festival experience featuring medieval- themed children’s games and activities, including demonstrations in archery, swordplay, and weaving. Young participants, many dressed in period costumes, experienced the thrill of being knighted or crowned by the King and Queen of the Norman Medieval Festival and decorated swords and crowns in the PLS Mobile Maker Lab.
In addition to the festivities, the event highlighted the library’s ongoing commitment to early childhood literacy initiatives such as Growing Like a Read. Families with children ages 0–5 were excited to take home a free Growing Like a Read resource kit, made possible by a federal Parent and Family Engagement Grant from the Oklahoma Partnership for School Readiness.
“The Royal Games truly brings our Foundation’s mission to life, illustrating how the generosity of our donors enriches hands-on learning experiences for children,” said Will Merrick, PLS development officer. “The funds raised will help sustain and enhance vital library programs that are accessible to everyone in the community.”
Local businesses generously supported the event, including OEC Fiber, First United Bank, Focus Federal Credit Union, McClain Bank, Mid-State Housing, and Sunset Estates Skilled Nursing. Refreshments were provided by Pioneer Telephone, Legacy Bank, Jacks Insurance, Purcell Municipal Hospital, Pruitt Investments, and Rock Star Roofing, with volunteer support from the Purcell and Newcastle Rotary Clubs.
