Yes, you read the headline correctly and it’s not a typo. The Newcastle Racer girls basketball team won their opening season game against Santa Fe South by a score of 96-2. The Racer boys won their game, 80-28.
Everyone played for the Racer girls and almost everyone scored, as well. Five Racers were in double figures, and another three players neared that amount.
Amara King led scoring with 15 points and Ziyah Sims had 14. Reagan Greenroyd had 13, and Jordyn Richardson and Emerson Marble had 12 each. Jailiana Salas and Lilly Taliaferro had nine each. Ava Snider had 8, and Khloe Young and Makayla Brown added another two each.
Newcastle scored 39 points in the first period, 23 points in the second, 24 in the third, and 10 in the fourth.
Fatima Rostro had a twopointer in the third quarter for Santa Fe South’s total.
The Racer boys poured in 28 first period points while holding Santa Fe South to only four points. The Saints managed to put in 14 points in the second period while Newcastle had 15. The Racers came back in the third to again dominate and hold Santa Fe to only four points again, while bucketing 17 points. The fourth period was 12-6 in Newcastle’s favor, giving the Racers an 80-28 win.
Scoring was shared by the Racers with Tony (TJ) Williams, Jr. hitting a team high 18, with Ivan Antwi-Donkor adding 17.
Kolton Brammer had 14 points, Weston Lightle had 6, Oliver Landers had 5, Owen Wright had 4, Cole Seely and Alan Price had three each. Joey Folsom, Timothy Porter, Kael Brickman, Jordan Price, and Jacob Espino had 2 points each.
Both Newcastle teams were scheduled to play Duncan at home Tuesday night. The outcome could not be determined because of the Newcastle Pacer print deadlines.
The Racers will play at the SOS Showcase tonight (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday), and then both Newcastle teams play at Del City on Tuesday.
