The McClain County Sheriff’s Office has a warning for local residents concerning a phishing telephone call scam.
A MCSO spokesperson said, “It has come to our attention that citizens in Mc-Clain County have received telephone calls from someone saying they are a sheriff’s office representative from outside McClain County and that their loved one has been incarcerated in the McClain County Jail. The caller further stated that their loved one would be released upon payment of a certain dollar amount to them in the form of a money card purchased at Wal Mart.”
The spokesperson said the money card information is requested to be given to the caller over the phone, and the caller then indicates that the loved one would then be released on an ankle monitor for the holidays.
“This is a scam and is not the procedure of the McClain County Sheriff’s Office,” they said. “Bond posting can be arranged through a bail bond agent or directly with the Mc-Clain County Court Clerk. Supervised release with an ankle monitor is coordinated with the McClain County District Court.”
The sheriff’s office says if there is any question, then hang up the phone and call the office at 405-527-2141.
