Newcastle finishes 2025 regular season with big win against Southeast

A Newcastle 56-7 win over Southeast last Thursday put the Racers in the driver’s seat as host for the first round of the OSSAA Class 5A State Playoffs.

Newcastle, second place in District 5A-1, earned the right to play host to Altus, the third-place team in District 5A-2.

The Racers finished District play with a 5-1 record, second place to Lawton Macarthur (5-1), a team Newcastle beat. Bishop McGuinness, also finished 5-1, and in third place in the District.

Altus finished 5-2, with losses only to Carl Albert and Guthrie. Their game against Guthrie went into overtime before Altus went down.

Newcastle Head Coach Jeff Brickman said the Racers are excited to host Altus in the first round of the playoffs.

“They are well-coached and we look forward to getting better this week,” Brickman said.

The Racers allowed only one touchdown in the game against Southeast (6-4, 2-4), while scoring 28 first quarter points, 14 second quarter points, and 7 each in the third and fourth for the total of 56 points.

The win put Newcastle’s season record at 7-3.

“We had a really good officiating crew and it was great weather,” Brickman said. “All of our players had an impact on the game and it was a great way to finish the regular season.”

Newcastle’s defense forced four fumbles and two interceptions. On special teams the Racers blocked a punt, had six touchbacks, and were perfect on extra points, according to Brickman. Defensively, the Racers allowed 167 total yards. Southeast went 14/25 passing for 147 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. They had 20 yards rushing on 19 attempts.

“Offensively, we had several explosive run plays by both running backs and completed both short and long pass plays for explosive plays,” Brickman said.

The Racers had 439 offensive yards, going 9/13 passing for 205 yards and two touchdowns. They rushed the ball 21 times for 234 yards and six touchdowns.

The game’s Most Valuable Player for Newcastle was Alec Shumard. Offensive Player of the Game was Jaden Fletcher, while Defensive Player of the Game was Kaden Longman.

Bryan Medrano earned the Special Teams Player of the Game. Preston Scagnetti was the Hammer Award winner, while Garrett Pratt earned the Knockdowns Award with nine. Scout Team Player of the Week was Jackson Hanner.

The first round playoff game with Altus begins at 7 p.m. Friday at Gene Reid Field.
