The true value of beef

OKLAHOMA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION / From the desk of Ford Drummond

Consumers across Oklahoma have noticed that beef prices are higher today than they’ve been in quite some time. But while the dollar amount on the grocery receipt may be larger, the story behind that number deserves a closer look.

When compared to the average hourly wage, beef today costs about the same as it did decades ago. In other words, beef has held its value remarkably well — delivering high-quality, nutritious protein at a fair price for hardworking families.

That stability doesn’t happen by accident. Oklahoma’s ranchers have faced some of the toughest years in memory. Persistent drought, soaring input costs, and increasing layers of government regulation have created enormous pressure on those who raise cattle. Yet through it all, our ranching families have not only persevered — they’ve improved.

Advances in genetics, animal care, and grazing management have led to beef that is more flavorful, consistent, and sustainably produced than ever before. Considering all that, it is fair that the price of beef today reflects its true value.

Behind every steak, roast and burger is a rancher who rises before daylight, cares for their cattle, and manages their land with pride and responsibility. Their commitment ensures that when you choose beef, you’re supporting local families and a way of life deeply rooted in stewardship and hard work.

Oklahomans continue to show their appreciation through strong demand for beef, both at grocery stores and restaurants across our state. For that, Oklahoma ranchers are sincerely grateful. Your continued trust and purchase of beef fuels rural economies and keeps our state’s proud cattle heritage alive.

So, as you fire up the grill, sit down at your favorite restaurant or gather around a robust pot of chili, know this — every bite of beef represents quality, dedication, and the enduring partnership between Oklahoma’s consumers and cattle producers.
