Newcastle takes on Southeast next Thursday night in end to regular season

Bishop McGuinness came out on top of Newcastle in the game of the undefeated District 5A-1 teams Friday night.

The win put McGuinness (5-0, 9-0) at the number 1 spot in the district and moved Newcastle (4-1, 6-3)down to number 3, even though the Racers beat number 2 Lawton MacArthur (4-1, 7-2) in a game the previous week.

Newcastle put up a good game, but the district’s number one added a field goal and then a fourth-quarter touchdown to win the game, 24-14.

Head Coach Jeff Brickman said, “We played well on defense but allowed some key third down conversions. On offense we were inconsistent and didn’t play to our standards.”

Brickman added that the Racers also had some substitution errors on defense and on special teams.

“It was a very competitive game,” Brickman said, with the halftime score at 17-14. “In the fourth quarter, we lined up to kick a field goal to tie the game and had 12 men on the field.”

The coach said they will be doing a better job in practice at trying to create similar situations.

“We did a great job of executing a punt block and were able to score right after the block on offense thanks to the short field,” Brickman said.

Quinn Housley had 13 tackles for the Racers. Preston Scagnetti had 12 tackles, Ashton Shumard had 10 tackles, and Kaden Longman had two receiving touchdowns.

Individuals receiving honors included: Parker Longest with the Scout Team award; Ben Rogers earned the Hammer; no one was noted for Knockdowns; Taylor (T.J.) Bradford was named both Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Game; and Housley was both Special Teams Player of the Game and Defensive Player of the Game.

The regular season concludes next week for the Racers with a Thursday night game against Southeast (2-3, 6-3).

The game, which will be played at Speegle Stadium at 698 S.W. Grand Blvd. in Oklahoma City, was moved from Friday night to Thursday night. Kick off is at 7 p.m.
