Discover, Create, and Learn with STEAM at PLS

Area libraries focusing on pathways to careers

Pioneer Library System (PLS) is inviting community members to read, make, and explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) this fall.

STEAM education plays a critical role in developing problem-solving abilities, collaboration, creativity, and emotional well-being. PLS is proud to provide an array of activities to strengthen these skills and provide pathways toward careers in STEAM-related fields.

Across PLS communities, hands-on STEAM experiences will be available for all ages. Whether it’s building a robot, experimenting with coding, or designing a piece of art, programs are designed to be fun, while also educational, making them a perfect opportunity for families, students, and lifelong learners alike.

“The library is a great place to get hands-on experience with STEAM concepts and technologies.” says Chris Hennes, a PLS STEAM Specialist, “whether it’s for a child who needs a safe space to learn and grow with others, a teen building new skills, or an adult who just needs to laser- engrave that last-minute birthday gift, PLS is committed to providing our communities with the tools and education they need to succeed.”

Alongside STEAM programs, five PLS locations have Maker Labs, designated spaces where community members can bring their ideas to life using tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, embroidery machines, and more. Maker labs provide all ages and skill levels with the opportunity to experiment and express creativity.

Additionally, the PLS Mobile Maker Lab offers fullservice STEAM experiences through the latest Maker technology across central Oklahoma communities. The Mobile Maker Lab offers hands-on learning experiences that can be scheduled for schools, libraries, and community events. It provides an accessible, mobile gateway to explore STEAM and connect with digital and print library resources.

A key goal of the STEAM initiative is to promote equity in access to high-quality educational tools and experiences. By offering diverse programs and mobile access, PLS ensures that everyone can benefit from STEAM learning.

In addition to programming, curated STEAM reading lists for kids, teens, and adults are available through PLS’s website. These lists offer great resources to extend learning beyond events and workshops.
