Big plays bring a ring of the dinner bell
The Midwest City Bombers were welcomed to Newcastle and Gene Reid Field for Friday night’s football game, but left without seeing the end zone.
Newcastle scored 51 points with double digits in the first, second and third quarters, before adding the final six points in the fourth.
Head Coach Jeff Brickman said the Racers had a great home field advantage with the accompanying fan support.
“The defense was outstanding with its best game of the season, specifically making five sacks,” Brickman said. “Our offense was very balanced both running and in the air.”
Brickman said the Racers started a new tradition in this game by having the players ring an old cowboy dinner bell on the sideline when they made a big play.
“The players and the fans both loved it,” Brickman said.
The Racers had a big play on their second drive of the game. On the first play, they completed a 70-yard glance route from Blake Creswell to Santorrio Boykins for a touchdown. In the second half, Ashton Shumard had a “pick 6” from his safety position. His brother, Alec Shumard, also caught a Midwest City player on a long play and stripped the ball out and the Racers recovered it.
The Racers had 252 passing yards and 212 rushing yards for a total of 464 yards. On defense, the Racers allowed 104 passing yards and 22 rushing yards, for a total of 126 yards. Newcastle’s defense had three turnovers and five sacks. On special teams they went 1/1 on field goal attempts.
Special recognition goes to Eduardo (Eddie) Ramirez-Munoz for Scout Team. Brody Foster won the Special Teams award. Quinn Housley received the Hammer and the Defensive Player of the Game. Garrett Pratt had seven Knock Downs, Santorrio Boykins was Offensive Player of the Game, and Taylor (TJ) Bradford was named Most Valuable Player.
The Racers have a bye week this week, and will return to action with their Homecoming game against Classen SAS on October 17.
