A Newcastle touchdown to tie the score was called back just before halftime, but it gave Elgin momentum going into the second half Friday night. The Owls beat Newcastle, 42-24.
Head Coach Jeff Brickman said poor tackling and busted coverages by the Racers on defense led to 42 points allowed. He added that poor execution on offense at times led to inconsistencies. Brickman said the special teams play, however, was very good.
“We had a touchdown called back before halftime for blocking down field on a pass play,” Brickman said. “Otherwise, we would have gone into halftime tied, 21-21. In the second half, we had some momentum and then allowed Elgin to convert a fourth and 21 that led to a score, taking the winds out of our sails.”
The Racers met four of its special teams goals for the game, but only one offensive goal and no defensive goals.
Individual players being recognized for their performances included: Chasen Burnside, Scout Team; Kaden Longman, Hammer; Garrett Pratt, knock downs (with 11); Jace Ledoux, offense; Kieran Horton, defense; Bryan Medrano, special teams; and Taylor (TJ) Bradford, Most Valuable Player.
District competition begins this week as the Racers travel to Duncan on Friday.
Brickman said Duncan is a very well coached team, and the Racers look forward to the challenge of not only being on the road, but also playing their first Class 5A-1 District game of the 2025 season.
