Peanut and Jelly, and a new partnership for Newcastle’s Shelter
Peanut chases a squeaky toy across the kennel. Jelly trots after him, tail wagging. A few minutes later the two young Lab mixes curl up together on a blanket, ready for a nap.
Both are waiting at the City’s Animal Shelter for families to take them home.
Stories like theirs are why the Shelter has joined the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Partners for Pets program.
The program helps shelters across the country place more animals into homes by offering grants, adoption support, and national attention.
For Newcastle, it means more chances for dogs like Peanut and Jelly, and for the cats and other dogs that fill the kennels each day.
“We want a shelter that can grow and do more every year,” said Justine Petalcu, director of Animal Control. “With a newer facility, three officers, and now the chance to take part in BISSELL Pet Foundation’s Partners for Pets program, we are better positioned to help animals find homes.”
For Newcastle, the program offers support that will help the Shelter expand adoption events, reach more families, and keep improving the care animals receive while they wait.
Adoption is simple. The fee is $40 and covers spay or neuter, a microchip, and vaccinations.
Each adoption changes the life of one animal and opens space for the next. From playful pairs like Peanut and Jelly to quiet cats looking for a sunny window, every pet at the Shelter is part of the community’s effort to do better every day.
And for Peanut and Jelly, that better day could come soon — when the right family walks through the door.
