Newcastle’s summer running program started June 2 and they had 55 kids turn out, according to Head Coach Jerald Lewis. The coach said they built their running base during the summer and the students have practiced hard leading up to the Deer Creek Cross Country meet opening the season on August 29. Forty-two runners will make the high school trip. Only seven runners make up the varsity roster, Lewis said, but all the junior varsity runners can also take part. He said, “Based on practice meets, we should do well. We are getting better. The girls group is a little smaller, but we have quality runners, and we are hoping for a top five finish.”
