Community rallies for stroke survivor
Newcastle recently witnessed a heartwarming display of compassion as friends and local businesses stepped up to support resident Daman Akram, a stroke survivor facing daily challenges.
A year and a half ago, Daman endured a major stroke, followed by eight months of intensive rehabilitation and ongoing physical therapy. Despite these hurdles, Akram continues to work full-time as a Zoning Researcher for First American Commercial Due Diligence of Norman, exhibiting remarkable drive and a customer-service oriented personality that keeps him engaged with his company.
Akram’s friend and co-worker Todd D’Amico said, “While Akram’s independent spirit makes it difficult for him to ask for assistance, a close friend, Cathi Millwee, recognized his need for help with tasks many take for granted. Taking him under her wing, Cathi has been instrumental in assisting Daman with everyday activities, including transportation for essential needs.”
Jessica Millwee, Cathi’s daughter and the manager of the local Great Clips, extended her support by providing Daman with a much-needed haircut.
“This act exemplifies the essence of compassion: a feeling of sympathy for others who are suffering, combined with a genuine desire to help,” D’Amico said.
Cathi and Jessica’s commitment to assisting Daman highlights the invaluable role of empathy and community support in stroke recovery. This act of kindness stands out as a beacon of neighborly goodwill in a world where such gestures sometimes seem rare, D’Amico said.
He added, “The Newcastle community is fortunate to have individuals like Jessica who demonstrate the power of compassion through their actions, especially when expressed through a locally ran business like Great Clips.”
Great Clips is a national chain. The Newcastle location is at 685 N.W. 32nd Street.
