Veterans Park
Newcastle Parks & Recreation and the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation have rescheduled the Newcastle Youth Fishing Derby for 5-8:30 p.m. this Saturday (July 19).
The first fishing derby date was cancelled after a significant amount of rainfall in the Newcastle area.
The rescheduled event, to be held at the Veterans Park pond at 803 N. Carr Drive, is for kids through age 15, and has been changed to be held in the evening.
Newcastle Parks & Recreation Director Kyle Marks said, “We are trying sunset fishing this time. We’ll see how people like it this year and gauge whether we want to change it from morning to evening next year.”
Prizes will be awarded for first- and second-place Biggest Fish for ages six and under, seven through 10, and 11-15. There will be prizes awarded for Overall Longest Fish, and Best Dressed Angler. First place is a fishing backpack and a gift card. Second place is also a fishing backpack and a gift card. Participants are also eligible to win one of more than 200 prizes.
Entry is free for the event and pre-registration continues through the day of the event. Participants can pre-register at newcastleok.gov/events. Organizers said if you pre-registered for the June 7 date, you won’t need to pre-register again.
Sponsors for the fishing derby are Snow Enterprises Commercial Investments, Pioneer Coop, Triton Foundation Repair, OEC/OEC Fiber, The First National Bank & Trust, Oklahoma Natural Gas, Community Bank of Oklahoma, Norman Regional Health System, Tinker Federal Credit Union, Contemporary Family Dentistry, and Boing City Party Rentals.
