An early deadline for the June 19 issue of the Newcastle Pacer is necessary because of the mail not running on Thursday, June 19.
All news submissions, display, classified and legal advertising must be in the Pacer office by 4 p.m. Friday, June 13.
According to govinfo.gov, Juneteenth was created as a federal holiday on June 19, 2021. Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the last African American slaves being freed in Texas.
An article on govinfo.gov states, “On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. This, however, was two-and-ahalf years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect January 1863, This day, the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, has become a day for African Americans to celebrate not only their freedom, but also their history, culture and achievements.”
The Newcastle Pacer will go back to regular deadlines after the June 19 issue.
